A team building laughter workshop addresses the team building objective of developing mutual trust and open communication among team members. It is complementary to other team building activities that aim to set goals, clarify roles and solve problems.
A common saying asserts that “the shortest distance between two people is laughter.” Laughter bonds people. Laughter melts away resentment de-dramatizes conflicts, and promotes a supportive positive atmosphere for better cooperation. It allows team members to see each other in a new light, stripped of roles and ego, as human beings with common feelings and aspirations. It focuses on one of the aspects of team building, i.e., interpersonal relations.
Not everyone has the same sense of humor, but everyone laughs in the same way. In a laughter workshop, we simulate laughter in various games that produce real laughter. We can thus sustain laughter longer and deeper than by using humor. Once the body is laughing, whether it was triggered by humor or by exercises, the body receives the same benefits.
As we laugh, opioids (endorphins) are secreted in the brain stimulating the brain’s pleasure centers. We empty our lungs of stale air and bring in more oxygen, reinforcing this feeling of wellbeing and energy and releasing stress. Laughter raises heart rate, exercises the abdominal muscles, among others, and reduces blood pressure. A laughter workshop is a great way to take a healthy break from team meetings to boost energy and increase productivity.
A laughter workshop is, among others, a practice in playfulness. Laughter emerges when we play together, and playing emerges when we laugh together. When work becomes play in the sense of something we enjoy, productivity increases. Laughter is a powerful stimulant for creative thinking. The mind needs permission to be playful for creativity to blossom, and laughter is a way to prime the mind for creativity.
Our primate ancestors engaged in play fights as part of their social interactions. They communicated that they were playing and not serious through a panting sound and “play face.” These innate behaviors evolved respectively into the laughter and smile of Homo sapiens.
Before humans invented language, the contagious nature of laughter served to directly communicate friendly feelings. Laughter was the original team building activity which helped the first humans to survive and thrive by favoring cooperation over conflict.
